California YOM Information for 1956 to 1962 California Vehicles / License Plates

In 1956, California issued new base license plates with a yellow background and black lettering. Passenger car plates have 3 letters and 3 numbers. Truck / commercial plates have 1 letter and 5 numbers.  

                                 

These plates can be used on 1956 - 1962 model-year California cars and trucks per the DMV's Year of Manufacture program as follows:

1956 California license plates = New base plates this year

For YOM registration of a 1956 model-year vehicle you will need a pair of front & rear, matching, DMV clear 1956 plates with NO stickers 
 

1957 California license plates = 1956 base plates & 1957 sticker

For YOM registration of a 1957 model-year vehicle you will need a pair of front & rear, matching, DMV clear 1956 plates with one 1957 DMV sticker on the rear plate

1958 California license plates = 1956 base plates & 1958 sticker

For YOM registration of a 1958 model-year vehicle you will need a pair of front & rear, matching, DMV clear 1956 plates with one 1958 DMV sticker on the rear plate

1959 California license plates = 1956 base plates & 1959 sticker

For YOM registration of a 1959 model-year vehicle you will need a pair of front & rear, matching, DMV clear 1956 plates with one 1959 DMV sticker on the rear plate

1960 California license plates = 1956 base plates & 1960 sticker

For YOM registration of a 1960 model-year vehicle you will need a pair of front & rear, matching, DMV clear 1956 plates with one 1960 DMV sticker on the rear plate

1961 California license plates = 1956 base plates & 1961 sticker

For YOM registration of a 1961 model-year vehicle you will need a pair of front & rear, matching, DMV clear 1956 plates with one 1961 DMV sticker on the rear plate

1962 California license plates = 1956 base plates & 1962 sticker

For YOM registration of a 1962 model-year vehicle you will need a pair of front & rear, matching, DMV clear 1956 plates with one 1962 DMV sticker on the rear plate
