California YOM Information for 1963 to 1969 California Vehicles / License Plates

In 1963, California issued new base license plates with a black background and yellow lettering. Passenger car plates have 3 letters and 3 numbers. Truck / commercial plates have 1 letter and 5 numbers.

                                

Passenger car plates can be used on 1963 - 1969 model-year California passenger cars and truck / commercial vehicle plates can be used on 1963 - 1969 model-year California trucks / commercial vehicles per the DMV's Year of Manufacture program as follows:

1963 California license plates = New base plates this year

For YOM registration of a 1963 model-year vehicle you will need a pair of front & rear, matching, DMV clear 1963 plates with NO stickers (plates must have 3 letters & 3 numbers for passenger cars OR 1 letter & 5 numbers for trucks/commercial vehicles)

 

1964 California license plates = 1963 base plates & 1964 sticker

For YOM registration of a 1964 model-year vehicle you will need a pair of front & rear, matching, DMV clear 1963 plates with one 1964 DMV sticker on the rear plate (plates must have 3 letters & 3 numbers for passenger cars OR 1 letter & 5 numbers for trucks/commercial vehicles)

1965 California license plates = 1963 base plates & 1965 sticker

For YOM registration of a 1965 model-year vehicle you will need a pair of front & rear, matching, DMV clear 1963 plates with one 1965 DMV sticker on the rear plate (plates must have 3 letters & 3 numbers for passenger cars OR 1 letter & 5 numbers for trucks/commercial vehicles)

1966 California license plates = 1963 base plates & 1966 sticker

For YOM registration of a 1966 model-year vehicle you will need a pair of front & rear, matching, DMV clear 1963 plates with one 1966 DMV sticker on the rear plate (plates must have 3 letters & 3 numbers for passenger cars OR 1 letter & 5 numbers for trucks/commercial vehicles)

1967 California license plates = 1963 base plates & 1967 sticker
